Hi, Dr James here and I’m one of the principal dentists at Elevate Dental. Last week I spoke with Trish from Richmond during her smile makeover appointment. During our discussion on having dental veneers, she asked me, “Is it actually important how much tooth structure remains?” I thought “that’s a great question!”, so I decided I’d make a video sharing my thoughts with you, just in case you are also considering upgrading your smile with ceramic veneers too.
There are several reasons why dental veneers can help patients. This can be due to unevenly shaped teeth, chipped or cracked tooth edges, crooked teeth alignment, a narrow smile, or discoloured or yellow teeth. Because of this, patients often find they hide their teeth when they smile, or they lack confidence in work or social situations. Dental veneers can either be completed with composite bonding or a ceramic option and can last from 5 years to over 15 years.
A critical factor in making these look amazing and long-lasting is preserving as much of the tooth structure as possible. Now the tooth has an outer layer called enamel and an inner, softer layer called dentin, which protects the nerve inside the tooth. Ceramic veneers are proven to be longer-lasting when they are bonded to the outside enamel layer. When we take a conservative approach, we are most likely to still be at the outside enamel layer for success.
In cases where teeth that already chipped or cracked, there is already less than ideal tooth structure remaining so preserving what’s left is even more critical. Advances in dentistry mean that we are able to provide a smile makeover that is minimal and extra conservative in approach to ensure long term success and ideal aesthetics.
While this conservative approach actually takes longer due to the precision required in the procedure, here at Elevate Dental, we believe this is critical in not only creating the beautiful natural smile for our patients now, but also for the health of their teeth in the long run.
