Hi, Dr James here. And I’m one of the Principal Dentists at Elevate Dental.
Yesterday, I was speaking with one of our long term patients Suzanne from Fitzroy, and she asked me, “What can I do about the gap in my teeth?” And this is a very common question we get. So I thought I’d make a video sharing with you what I shared with her, just in case you also want to do something about the gap in your teeth.
There are several reasons why there may be a gap between teeth. This could be due to a missing tooth, teeth that are out of alignment, irregularly shaped teeth, or chipped or old, large fillings.
Depending on the cause and size of the gap, options can include a simple cosmetic touch up with a tooth coloured material to close the space, or with dental veneers, which are thin shells of material that are bonded over the teeth to close the space and create teeth that are evenly shaped.
Now, this can either be made of a tooth coloured composite, similar to what’s used for general fillings, or the longer-lasting ceramic material, which can last for over 15 years and just looks so natural and perfect.
You can have dental crowns, which are ceramic caps that can change the shape of the tooth to close a space. These are meticulously handmade by some of Melbourne’s leading ceramicists and customised to close the space perfectly. This is a great option where old fillings have been attempted but space is beyond what a filling can fix.
If there’s a missing tooth, a good option is to have a new permanent replacement tooth. This can either be with a dental bridge, which are dental crowns or caps joined together to span the missing space. Or alternatively, dental implants, which are titanium posts supported within the jawbone with a crown on top. These options can last well over 15 to 25 years and can be as comfortable and strong as a natural tooth.
Treatment can also be done to align the teeth, such as with Invisalign. This state-of-the-art clear aligner technology allows us to fix alignment issues and close spaces. Invisalign is discrete and virtually invisible, incredibly efficient in moving teeth to the perfect spot quickly, and best of all is very comfortable.
I hope this has given you a better understanding of the options to close up a gap in your teeth. If you have gaps between your teeth and you want us to assess it for you, we would love to help. We’ll take some photos, we’ll take a 3D scan, we’ll do some mock-ups and show you what can be done and what might be the best option for you.
