What Happens at My Child’s First Dental Checkup?

I was speaking with one of our patients, Lisa from Abbotsford. She was planning to bring her three-year-old and one-year-old for their first dental checkup and was curious about what would happen at their appointment.

Introduction

Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental. A few weeks ago, I was speaking with one of our patients, Lisa from Abbotsford. She was planning to bring her three-year-old and one-year-old for their first dental checkup and was curious about what would happen at their appointment. This is a very common question we get from parents, so I thought I’d share with you what I shared with her.

The Importance of Early Dental Visits

If you have a young child who hasn’t experienced their first dental visit yet, this is an exciting time for your child. Here at Elevate Dental, we want to provide your child with a comfortable and safe environment. We find that regular visits to the dental clinic at an early age result in less need for extensive treatment, as well as far less fear of the dentist. We’ve got a few tips and tricks up our sleeve to make their experience as fun and enjoyable as possible. We make it a fun experience for your child with children’s songs, cool glasses, and generally a really nurturing and caring environment to support your child and their dental health.

What Happens During the First Dental Visit

So this is what usually happens when your child first comes. We’re going to be introducing the child to the dental chair and encouraging them to sit in the chair. Sometimes it helps to sit on mum and dad’s lap if they’re feeling a little bit apprehensive. We’ll make it fun with lots of children’s songs in the background. So if you’ve got a favourite playlist or songs like Wiggles or Bluey, then, by all means, let us know. We’re going to set it up so that the environment feels warm and comfortable to them. We’ve also got some cool sunnies to help protect their eyes from the bright lights that will shine on them. Usually, the dentist will then check all the teeth, the gums, soft tissues. We’re really looking for any growth and development issues of the teeth, gums and jaws, and also looking for any signs of holes and bacteria. Depending on how comfortable each child is and also the age of the child, we may introduce tooth polishing to clean the teeth, just to make them more sparkly clean. Now at the end of each appointment, the dentist will always talk through whether there are any potential issues and also best home care tips and tricks.

Preventive Care and Identifying Issues Early On

As a practice, we’re really, really focused on preventive care and identifying issues early on. We find that finding these issues early can prevent a lot of pain and discomfort and stress in the future. We’re all trained to identify early signs of sleep apnea and grinding in children and also potential airway problems that may impact the growth of the top and lower jaws. Jaw growth has a huge impact on how the future teeth will grow and develop and it’s really, really important in young children to make sure that the jaws are in the right spot to allow for easier growth of the permanent teeth.
