Hi, Dr James here, and I’m one of the Principal Dentists at Elevate Dental here in Melbourne.
Yesterday, a long-term patient and my friend Harper from Cremorne paid us a visit. She had come in with a toothache. And as we spoke, she asked me, “I’ve never had a toothache before, I’m a bit nervous. What will you do to help me with my toothache?”
This is a common question we get when a patient comes in with a toothache. Naturally they would feel anxious, not knowing what to expect. So I thought I would make a video to share with you what dentists do with our patients when they get a toothache.
Toothaches are one of the most difficult things to experience. This often leads to difficulty in sleeping, chronic pain, inability to eat and drink properly, loss of appetite and weight loss, and lost work time. The pain threshold varies from patient to patient. What is perceived as low-level pain may actually be a major dental condition requiring extensive treatment. On the other hand, an intense toothache may sometimes have a simpler solution.

Here at Elevate Dental, we offer same-day emergency dental appointments to help get you out of the pain. And treatment will vary depending on the cause of the problem.
For a broken or cracked tooth, a new filling may be sufficient, or for one that requires something stronger, then a ceramic cap or crown may be an alternative. Infections can be drained or cleaned out to release the pus.
For nerve infections, this might take multiple visits to complete, but having the first treatment will almost always provide relief and improvement. Toothaches due to clenching or grinding can be relieved by having a custom-fitted protective guard made. And this can be started on the day.

In some cases where it’s too severe, the tooth may need to be extracted. Some treatment options may need more time or financial considerations, beyond what can be decided on that very day. It can be quite difficult to come to an informed decision when in pain. Where relevant, a course of strong medications can be provided for prompt, pain relief, and immediate stabilisation before deciding on a future treatment plan.
Many toothaches will require medical attention. That is why you need to see your dentist immediately so you can treat it properly. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help until you see a dentist. If you’re experiencing toothaches, like I mentioned, we offer same day emergency dental services that can help you. We’re conveniently located at both Hawthorn and Richmond with free onsite parking.
