Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental.
I was speaking with one of our patients, Elizabeth from Carlton, a couple of weeks ago, who has a six-month-old daughter. She wasn’t sure when to start bringing her in. So I thought I’d make a video to share with you what I shared with her.
We usually suggest your child’s first dental visit when your baby’s first tooth comes visible or when they have reached 12 months old, whichever comes first. Of course, if you notice anything you think is out of the ordinary before this time, it’s always best to be safe than sorry, and book an appointment straight away.
Now, there are a few reasons why we encourage a dental visit at this age.
Now, jaw growth has a huge impact on how the future teeth will grow and develop. One of the most common habits that can impact jaw growth is thumb sucking and dummy sucking. This can actually affect and cause a lot of crowding in the future, especially when the big teeth start coming through. All of our dentists are trained to identify any potential problems and offer advice and solutions if this is what we find.
We encourage a dental visit at this age is to help your child relax at the dental clinic. Dental fear is one of the biggest reasons why people avoid dental treatment. And this can result in long-term damaging effects, not only to the teeth but also to the person’s self-esteem.
Here at Elevate Dental, we want to provide your child with a very comfortable and safe environment. We find that regular visits to the dentist at an early age result in less need for extensive dental treatment, and a significantly less fear of the dentist. We make it a fun experience with children’s songs, cool glasses and a nurturing, caring environment to support your child in their dental health.
So I hope this gives you a better understanding of when to bring your child in for their first dental checkup and why. If you have kids and are looking for a caring dentist to look after them, we would love to help. We are conveniently located at both Hawthorn and Richmond with onsite parking. Simply call us at 1300 2 SMILE, complete the form on our website or direct message us on social media. We’ll be in touch to help you organise your consultation. See you in the next video.
