Dental Fillings
These are used to fill in a hole or space of a decayed tooth or fill in areas with erosion and excessive wear. First, the dentist will clean and removed the decayed portion of the tooth, then it will be filled in with either a composite or resin type of filling to protect the tooth from further damage.
Inlays & Onlays
These are used when a damaged or decayed tooth needs more than a filling, but part of the original tooth structure can be saved, avoiding the need for a crown. Inlays are used to cover the chewing surface of a tooth strengthen it, and can help a filled tooth look more natural. Onlays are used when the chewing surface of a tooth is removed to replace the missing part. They cover a larger area than an inlay, while allowing the original tooth to remain intact.
Crowns
Dental crowns are used when most of the tooth has been lost. They may also be used to protect a cracked or a weak tooth and is an option to save a small portion of the tooth and the original root. In some cases, a patient may receive an implant with a crown attached as a secure way to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
A dental crown is usually made of porcelain, a material that looks just like natural teeth, but may also be made of zirconia for teeth that need extra protection. Some cases where zirconia may be used are for patients who clench or grind their teeth or for back molars where chewing force is greater. On average, dental crowns can last 15 years and more, depending on oral hygiene practices, diet and general care of the crown.
Dental Bridge
Sometimes more than one tooth needs replacing. When this happens, we may consider a bridge, which consists of the crowns that replace the missing tooth (or teeth) and crowns that anchor the bridge from both sides of the missing tooth.
Firstly, what is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is a set of procedures or dental treatments that help restore teeth to health. In some cases, a tooth may need extraction, and if so, we will find the right way to fill the space for you. During the dental exam, we will do a full evaluation and consider your current teeth placement, bite and future goals so we can design a treatment plan that suits your needs. We know that straight teeth are healthy teeth, and easier to take care, helping to ward off future problems and maintain your oral health.
Who needs Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry covers a large area of treatment, and so many people may benefit from restorative dentistry. Our dentists at Elevate Dental believe that the best treatment should preserve as much of your original teeth as possible. A thorough dental exam along with your input will help us determine which type of restorative dentistry is right for your situation. To determine, we may do the following:
- A thorough dental examination to look around for any problems
- Possible x-rays to detect decay or problems under the gum or inside teeth
- An evaluation as we consider the health of your teeth, any dental issues or problems and your goals for oral health

If a problem like decay or wear is small, we first consider a dental filling. If the hole or damage is larger, we consider inlays or onlays, and when the damage is extensive, we will consider a dental crown. But not all extensive damage can be repaired by crowns. When there are too many teeth that cannot be saved, a dental bridge may be the best option.
Dental crowns are not good for wisdom teeth because they are too far back and difficult to manage and care for. If there is damage on a wisdom tooth, the recommended treatment is usually removal. Dental crowns also may not help repair loose teeth or a highly damaged tooth with little structure. Lastly, if there is severe gum disease, we may need to extract the tooth, or try to heal the gum disease and see if we can then use a crown.

Had a pleasant visit. The staff were incredible and so is the dentist. A bit nervous visiting the dentist but they made me feel comfortable during the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our trusted dentists are here to help you with your individual needs. Explore our FAQs below or contact us if you have a specific question.
How do I know if I need restorative dentistry?
You may require restorative dentistry if you have dental problems such as decay, wear, damage, or missing teeth. The best way to determine if you need restorative dentistry is to regularly see a dentist (at least twice a year). Thorough and regular dental examinations by a professional dentist can help determine if you need restorative dentistry. Your dentist can also inform you what type of treatment will be best for your teeth.
What does a dental exam for restorative dentistry involve?
A dental exam for restorative dentistry involves a thorough evaluation of your dental health. The exam will identify dental issues or problems and your goals for oral health. At a dental exam, we’ll provide a diagnosis, analysis, and recommendations for your treatment. We may need to conduct x-rays to detect decay or problems under the gums or inside your teeth. We’ll inform you about the next steps and whether you need dental crowns, fillings, bonding, implants, or dentures.
How can I maintain my oral health after restorative dentistry?
It’s simple — by maintaining good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing thoroughly twice a day (using an electric toothbrush for best results), flossing daily, and visiting your dentist every six months. Also, try to avoid hard, sticky food; if you play contact sports, wear a mouthguard. Simple preventative measures now can prevent future dental problems and ensure the continued effectiveness of restorative dentistry.
Which restorative dentistry treatments are best for me?
If the damage is minor, you may benefit from a dental filling. If your teeth have significant damage, your restorative dentist may consider more extensive restorative dentistry. When the damage is extensive, you may need a dental crown. A dental bridge may be required if the damage is more widespread and severe across multiple teeth.
Can dental crowns fix my teeth?
Dental crowns are coverings for existing teeth. A crown will make your decayed or broken tooth stronger and more durable. However, dental crowns may not be able to help loose or damaged teeth that have weakened structure. They also cannot help teeth affected by severe gum disease — in these cases, the affected tooth may need to be extracted. Or, we can try to heal the gum disease before attempting to use a dental crown.
